20 ARTISTS, 20 BOXES,

20 SHOP WINDOWS

This exhibition will take place in the shop windows of the small market town of Harleston, Norfolk. Twenty shop keepers have agreed to give up their shop window so that the space can be used by an artist to exhibit their art work. The twenty artists involved have all been given a large cardboard box, donated by Corrugated Bux of Pulham St Mary, with which to make their work.

Artists taking part are Brian Alabaster, Les Bicknell, Theresa Boudreaux, Sidney Brouet, Tony Casement, Liz Clark, Paul Cope, Jack Crampton, Heather Demmon, Moss Fuller, Nicola Gibson, Neil Hanger, Bridget Heriz, Gerald Nason, Rob Rutterford, Brian Seabon, Andrew Smith, David Whatley, Tim Wilson and Caroline Wright. Shops taking part include Terry Beales Butchers, Lesley Jackson, Corkes Off Licence, Global Travel, Lings Motorcycles, Pen and Paper, Sue Read Shoes and The Grooming Parlour. Artists have been allocated windows by a random ballot held in the Laxfield Low House.

The resulting show will turn the streets of Harleston into an art gallery from April 26th until May 11th 2002.

The exhibition is part of the First Harleston and Waveney Festival which includes music, drama and art.

Paul Cope and Andrew Smith have been organising unusual art events in East Anglia since 1997. Our last show, Drain, attracted over 1000 visitors to it's Fressingfield farm location. 45 artists were given four metre lengths of land drainage pipe to inspire their work on that occasion and some of the results can be seen elsewhere on this website. ShopBox is also a development of another exhibition, HAIR. Twelve artists a year display art work in the window of Douglas Adams Haircutting in Upper Olland Street, Bungay for a month each. This is now in it's fifth year.

ShopBox will be another lively and inspiring exhibition right in the heart of a vibrant market town. Should be interesting.
